PURPOSE:To enable a fuel cell to work despite little leakage of hydrogen gas by leading hydrogen gas leaking from the sealing areas of a cell stack which extend in the direction of the stacking and an inactive gas fed into auxiliary manifolds together outside the cell by attaching the auxiliary manifolds between adjacent manifolds in such a manner as to cover the sealing areas. CONSTITUTION:Auxiliary manifolds 11 are airtightly fixed between adjacent manifolds 5 and 6 in such a manner as to cover the sealing areas 7 between a cell stack 1 and the manifolds 5 and 6 which extend in the direction of the stacking. The upper and the lower surfaces of each auxiliary manifolds 11 are respectively provided with a lead-out pipe 13 and a lead-in pipe 15 which has a control valve 14. After the pipes 13 and 15 are respectively bundled up, the lead- in pipes 15 are connected to a source 16 of an inactive gas for example nitrogen gas and the lead-out pipe 13 is extended to a safety zone which is apart from the cell. A hydrogen-gas detector 17 for operating a control valve 14 provided in the above lead-in pipe 15, is installed in each auxiliary manifold 11 adjacent to the sealing area. |
