POLYETHER DERIVATIVE USEFUL AS IONOPHORE

NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R<1>-R<4> are H or alkyl; R<4> may be benzyl, 2-phenylethyl, 3-(naphthyl-1-oxy)propyl or group of formula II (n>=2)]. EXAMPLE:1-[3'-( o-Carboxylphenyloxy )propyloxy]-2-[3'-( o-ethoxyphenyloxy )-propyloxy]-4(or 5)-t-butylbenzene. USE:A cation transfer agent (ionophore) acting selectively especially to lithium ion, capable of transferring the ion against concentration gradient, and having equal rate of transfer independent of the kind of anion. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by hydrolyzing the compound of formula III (R<5> is protecting group) under alkaline condition. When the compound is used as an ionophore, and two kinds of solutions A and B are contacted indirectly interposing the solution of the ionophore M between them, the cation contained in the solution A can be transferred to the solution B.
