PURPOSE:To avoid detection of redundant feature points and to ensure a high- speed detection of feature points by obtaining simultaneously both white and black feature point information from two type series patterns and deciding the line group to be scanned next from the using type pattern series. CONSTITUTION:A type generating circuit 52 scans the contents of a line memory 51 to produce a type pattern series and sends this pattern series to a type pattern converting circuit 53. The circuit 53 produces the input pattern series and its inverted type series and sends the former to a black region apex detecting circuit 54 and the latter to a white region apex detecting circuit 55 respectively. At the same time, both series are sent to a scanning line deciding circuit 56. The circuits 54 and 55 decide the presence or absence of feature points of black and white regions respectively. When an apex is detected, the feature point information is sent to a scan circuit 50. The circuit 56 decides the line group to be scanned next from the using type pattern series and sends the information which extracts said line group to the circuit 50 to start the scan of the next scanning line.
