The apparatus (10) for destroying ribbon cassettes and the like has a cutter mechanism (111) with a plurality of cutting stamps (114...119) which are guided in a longitudinally displaceable manner in a common guide (121) and interact with a cutting plate (122). The cutting plate (122) is provided with cutting holes (124) whose number, arrangement and design are matched to the cutting stamps. Between the guide (121) of the cutting stamps (114...119) and the cutting plate (122) is a bearing surface (128) for the material to be cut, by which the material to be cut is in each case held in a cutting position in which it projects at least partially into the path of movement of the cutting stamps (114...119). The cutting stamps (114...119) are reciprocally moved by a drive device (112). The drive device (112) has a drive motor (164) in the form of an electric motor, especially a geared motor, a step-down gear (163) and an eccentric drive (162). In another embodiment, the drive device has a spindle drive. By means of the apparatus, the material to be cut is progressively cut into small sections, as a result of which a ribbon is likewise cut into a plurality of small longitudinal sections which are thoroughly mixed together. <IMAGE>
