For the prevention of disoriented drivers driving the wrong way on the motorway or driving into streets in a direction which is not permitted. Warning signals are generated by a buzzing tone and flashing light on the dashboard with simultaneous switching on of the hazard indicator system of the vehicle. After driving 5 or 6 m incorrectly into the motorway exit, three current-conducting contact thresholds which are arranged parallel to one another and are at different distances from one another (3.2) are present. As a result, a distinction is made on the dashboard between leaving an exit correctly, and at the same time no warning being issued, and entering a motorway incorrectly, and at the same time a warning being given. This distinction is brought about by the "time pulse switch" (11/32) which decides, after the respective third touch contact has been triggered, whether or not a warning is to be issued to the driver driving in the wrong direction. If the pulse times or pulse routes passed through are "long-short", the driver driving the wrong way is warned. The necessary contact thresholds are located in a raised position on the carriageway surface and embedded in bitumen so that the required two sliding contacts attached to a mudflap cannot activate the warning signals when passing through puddles. Therefore, there is a safety distance between the lower edge of the sliding contact and the surface of the carriageway of approximately 8 cm. After the warning occurs, the warning signals automatically switch off again. The hazard indicator system has to be subsequently switched off again manually.
