A method for signal limitation when predefined voltage levels are exceeded and a controlled limiter circuit, in particular for limiting the AF signal voltage fed from a microphone to a downstream amplifier in the event of overload, where the amplifier is used simultaneously as a limiter (level controller) and, if the voltage level is exceeded, is activated by an actuator with an exponential characteristic to define the control depth. At the amplifier output, a window discriminator detects when the AF signal voltage supplied by the microphone exceeds the level and, during the period of excess, a downstream timer is activated which feeds a time-proportional activation signal to the actuator.
