This invention relates to chlorine-containing gas generator comprising an electrotytic cell (8) containing an electrolyte comprising an aqueous solution of a soluble chloride salt and having an anode (26) and a cathode (24) disposed in an anode compartment (22) and a cathode compartment (23), respectively, on either side of a permeable membrane (21). Known generators suffer from slow start-up and do not produce chlorine dioxide. According to the present invention the cell (8) includes a bipolar electrode (30) positioned in said anode compartment (22) said bipolar electrode (30) being of a size and shape so as to permit free circulation of the aqueous electrolyte therearound and being disposed so as to be exposed on all sides to said aqueous electrolyte. Also provided is a method of and system for chlorination of water and a method of generating chlorine-chlorine dioxide containing mixtures. |
