In this process, a halftone negative and a halftone positive, which have exactly the same image size and sharpness and have been exposed and developed in the same density interval of the gradation curve, are produced from the original halftone image. This halftone negative is fitted congruently over the halftone positive and used for producing a contour film. The exposure is here carried out in such a way that the light predominately penetrates at the density changes. The final image, which especially is a halftone image, is prepared from the contour film thus obtained, which has no image gradation, with a desired density interval from the film image produced from the original halftone image.
