Irrespective of whether the called subscriber goes off-hook, his identification signal transmitter is activated in response to an incoming call and the subscriber identification signal is transmitted in the telephony channel to the calling subscriber and is shown on the latter's display; when the identification signal of the called subscriber is received, the calling subscriber's identification signal transmitter is activated, whereupon the identification signal of the calling subscriber is transmitted to the called subscriber, is shown on the latter's display irrespective of whether the called subscriber goes off-hook and, if the called subscriber does not go off-hook within a predefined time span, is stored in an identification signal receiving memory, along with call time information supplied by a local timer.
