An aqueous primer for wood surfaces contains (a) polyvinyl alcohol and/or polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl acetate/graft polymers as binders and (b) 0.01 to 6 parts by weight, relative to 100 parts by weight of binder, of esters of orthophosphoric acid with aliphatic alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, conventional additives, pigments and/or dyestuffs and also, if appropriate, organic solvents. The invention also relates to the use of these binders for the treatment of wood surfaces.
