In magnetic coding devices for workpiece carriers having several magnets supported in a holder (1), the successive magnetising directions of which represent a binary coded decimal number, small disk-shaped single magnets (7) are used which are loosely held adjacently to one another in holes (2) extending transversely to the longitudinal extent of the holder (1) and the polarity of which is reversed by turning-over in the respective hole when a code is changed. In the read position, the magnets (7) are held by a brake device (4) which can be electromagnetically moved away in the write position so that the magnets (7) can be turned over under the action of an external magnetic field in order to achieve a local change of polarity by 180 DEG within the holes. <IMAGE>
