PURPOSE:To produce plasminogen activator, economically, by culturing plasminogen activator-producing cell in a synthetic medium added with transferrin, ethanolamine, and selenous acid. CONSTITUTION:A serum-free synthetic medium is prepared by adding transferrin, ethanolamine, selenous acid, and preferably a proliferation promoting factor (QGF) to a base medium such as RPMI-1640 (product of GIBCO Corp.). Plasminogen activator-producing cell (e.g. cell strain QG-90) is cultured in the serum- free synthetic medium at about 30-40 deg.C, and the produced plasminogen activator is separated from the cultured product and purified, e.g. by gel-filtration. The plasminogen activator is effective to activate plasminogen and produce plasmin for pharmaceutical use.
