A motorised rotary cutter for removing solid coating layers from underground surfaces such as traffic areas and the like, which is equipped with a power-driven rotating cutting roller (16) which has, distributed over its length, radially projecting cutting tools (27) and which is mounted essentially transversely to the direction of working of the cutter on a support vehicle and is level-controlled in relation to the underground surface by a device (18) which scans the surface behind the cutting roller (16) in the direction of working, supports the cutting tools (27) on pins (28) which are parallel to the shaft (21) of the cutting roller and on which the cutting tools (27) are mounted outside their centres of gravity. The direction of rotation of the cutting roller (16) is at the same time selected in such a manner that its side facing the coating layer (25) to be removed moves towards the latter. <IMAGE>
