Oil slicks are first covered with a layer of solid carbon dioxide e.g. frozen pellets. Then a flexible, tight fitting thermal insulating medium is applied until the oil solidifies so that it can be removed with a tool or rolled up as a single piece. - The thermal insulating layer can be of paper or a plastic tarpaulin.
