PURPOSE:To obtain a rapid collecting speed and relatively large collecting capacity to a hydrophobic substance, by using a colloidal clay-org. substance comlex obtained by reacting fatty amines with clay such as montomorillonite as a collecting material. CONSTITUTION:Fatty amines each pref. having a 4-20C carbon chain, such as, laurylamine hydrochloride and clay such as bentonite or montomorillonite are reacted to form a colloidal clay-org. substance complex solution as a collecting material of a hydrophobic substance. This collecting material is directly added to an aqueous solution containing the hydrophobic substance or brought into contact with hydrophobic gas to adsorb and collect the hydrophobic substance. As the hydrophobic substance to be collected, there are a liquid, a gaseous or a fine solid particle like ones such as oil, rinolic acid, hexane, a hydrophobic chelate, oxalic acid or iodine and this collecting material can be adapted to these substances.
