PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance from inexpensive raw material, in high yield, by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of a diphenyl ether derivative in the presence of molecular oxygen, using a catalyst containing lead oxide in combination with titanium oxide, zirconium oxide, tin oxide, cerium oxide, etc. CONSTITUTION:Dibenzofuran is prepared by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of the compound of formula (R is 1-3C alkyl; m and n are 0-5) in the presence of molecular oxygen by using a catalyst containing (A) PbO and (B) one or more components selected from TiO2, ZrO2, SnO2 and CeO2. The amounts of the component A and B in the catalyst are 1-90wt% and 10-99wt%, respectively, and the catalyst is prepared e.g. by suspending the powder of the component B in an aqueous solution of a lead compound, concentrating the resultant slurry, and forming the concentrate, or by spraying the slurry to a carrier and calcining the product. EFFECT:Since oxidation by-product is scarcely produced by the process, the purification of the product can be carried out easily.
