PURPOSE:To perform cracking of heavy oil into light oil and produce hydrogen economically over a long period of time, by using iron and steel dust as catalyst for the cracking. CONSTITUTION:In the catalytic cracking of heavy oil into light oil and production of hydrogen by steam/iron reaction using a catalyst which contains iron as active ingredient, iron and steel dust is used as catalyst to insure economical operation for a long period of time. Preferred iron and steel dust includes casting dust, converter dust, etc. in powder, slurry or cake. The dust should preferably be dried, subjected to natural oxidation, crushed in a particle size of 5mu or smaller, mixed with water, granulated in a diameter of 10-600mu, dried and sintered at 1,000-1,300 deg.C.
