PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of prediction of the number of characters included in a character lump in addition to the contact among the characters by predicting the number of character based on an average character width of one character obtained while correcting sequentially the average character width of adjacent character lump classes. CONSTITUTION:An average value of a character width class stored in a character width class information register 10 is transferred to a register 111. A register 112 stores an average value of the width of one character. A dividing section 113 divides this average value by an average value of one character width, calculates the number of characters included in a character lump belonging to the character width class and stores the result to a register 114. The content of the register 114 is set to a character width class character number information register 12 as character number information in the character width class by a controller 7. The dividing section 115 calculates the average value of one character width corrected by dividing the average value of the character width class by the character number and the result is stored in the register 112. The operation above is executed to the character width class including the contact among the characters.
