PURPOSE:To simplify a program and a circuit and to attain accurate identification by combining to form a reading object character with plural segments, obtaining an area of a character pattern from a picked-up picture of the character area and comparing and identifying the area with a reference area. CONSTITUTION:A character group formed by combining properly segments A, B, C is displayed in a set area on an article 1. The picked-up picture of a character read at each area by an image pickup section 2 is led to a signal processing circuit 3, where the picture is binary-processed. Then, the number of picture elements of the character picture is counted at first at an operation processing circuit 5. That is, an area of each character is obtained. Then, the area is compared with plural reference areas in which each count value is preset, and the coincident area is selected among them and the corresponding character is obtained. Thus, the recognition of the character is applied to all the areas, the each character information thus obtained is fed to a controller and controlled by the content of control corresponding to the character information.
