Process and hearth for burning swelling coals in a fluidised bed in a chamber C, the bottom of which consists of a mechanical grid 5 movable from the front backwards, below which there are arranged caissons 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e for blowing fluidising gas, the said grid being inclined upwards over at least part of its length and being edged at the front and on its sides with planar surfaces 6a, 7a, 8a on which banks 6, 7, 8 of unfluidised coal are formed. To make such a combustion possible, the coal is introduced into the bed 12 at a distance from the banks 6, 7, 8 and at least a proportion of the flue gases is recycled into the blowing caissons 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e so as to produce a great agitation of the bed 12 above the first caissons 9a, 9b starting from the front of the grid 5 while limiting the temperature level of the bed 12. <IMAGE>
