The invention relates to the metallurgy of nonferrous metals. According to the invention a charge of secondary aluminium is subjected to liquefaction in a molten bath of alkaline-earth metal halides, the said bath having a density of 2.7 to 3.9 g/cm<3>. The liquefaction is carried out at a temperature of 720 to 1050 DEG C with a proportion by weight of halide melt bath to secondary aluminium charge equal to 1 - 10/1. The invention can find applications in the mechanical, radio or electronics industries.
