A test device (P) in PCM telecommunications switching systems for functional testing of switched connections can be looped via break plug blocks (x) into the PCM line by means of break plugs (y). Initially connected to the PCM line (PCM30F) only at the receiving end via a contact (1y), it is first synchronised to the line clock by means of a receive switching device (E). It then connects itself at the transmitting end, also via contact (3y), to the PCM line, whose direct switched connection, which had existed up until this time, it then isolates by means of the break contact (2y) in order to divert the switched connection onto itself. The test device (P) extracts PCM signals of a selected channel and/or inserts PCM signals for this channel, along with the corresponding components of the signal channel. The PCM signals of all other channels run through unchanged, along with the corresponding components of the signal channel. Furthermore, a selected channel can also be isolated during the test procedures by means of the break contact (2y) (data signals and/or line signals), while the other channels can continue their operation unhindered. <IMAGE>
