The invention relates to a control device for extension devices in which the traction force prevailing in a traction rope for the extension of body parts or extremities of a patient is translated in a linear deflection movement and is converted to digital values with an encoding disc. The digital, selectively encoded signals are compared with target values entered in digital form and cause control of the traction rope motor as a function of the target value-actual value comparison of the traction force and as a function of the particular type of treatment set in an electronics program. A plurality of safety switches guarantee interruption of the energy supply to the traction rope motor, so that malfunction can be ruled out. Besides a large variety of treatments it is possible to set the particular traction force required in arbitrary digital steps and, in addition, to ensure exact adjustment of the active and passive pauses during treatment in intermittent and periodic operation. A monitoring circuit which causes triggering of an alarm on failure of one of the digital measurement pick-up elements and interrupts energy supply to the traction rope motor is provided for self-monitoring of the control circuit.
