The invention relates to a process for the friction welding of parts, in which the two parts to be welded are rotated relative to one another during a heating phase under slight mutual pressure; after sufficient friction heating of the parts, their relative rotation is braked, and the parts, which are stationary relative to one another, are pressed together with high axial force. In order to shorten the braking time, it is proposed to rotatably mount both parts and to apply the requisite braking or acceleration work to both parts to be welded, which braking or acceleration work is necessary to bring about the relative stoppage of both parts. This can be done by the part stopped first in the heating phase being accelerated in the braking phase in the direction of rotation of the rotating part. According to another proposal along the same lines, the two parts are driven in opposite directions of rotation during the heating phase and are then braked approximately at the same time and equally rapidly. Owing to the two proposals which can be used alternatively, a shorter braking time can be achieved, as a result of which materials with a low melting point and high thermal conductivity, such as, for example, aluminium, can also be welded without glazing of the weld structure in the peripheral direction. Such glazing would impair the strength of the welded joint.
