The filter used for separating solid particles from a pressurised liquid is cleaned of the separated solid particles by backwashing. In this case, the backwashing is carried out using only that liquid which is located in the dirty side of the filter itself, that is by the gaseous phase of this liquid which is formed by evaporation. For this purpose, a pressure is established at the discharge outlet for the separated solid particles below the vapour pressure of the liquid in the filter. In the apparatus proposed for carrying out this process, there is provided a covering element which seals the area of the filter to be backwashed on the outlet side against the pressurised liquid.
