Arranged inside the hard plastic outer shell (1) of the helmet and in direct contact with it is a second plastic shell (2). On the side with which it touches the other, one of the two shells has a multiplicity of small projections or points (3) lying close together which in the event of an impact are intended to be destroyed and to thereby dissipate energy. At least the points or even the entire shell carrying them must be made of a material which is not too soft or elastic so that the points are destroyed as completely as possible by the impact. The other shell must be at least as hard as the shell with the points, which is made, for example, of glass-fibre-reinforced acrylic resin. For example, the other shell must be made of the same material or another hard plastic (polycarbonate, ABS). The inner shell preferably extends only down to about the level of the temple, carries the projections on the outside and is interchangeable. The chin strap (6) has branches (6a and 6b) which are each anchored at two points (7, 8) and (7', 8') respectively on both sides of the helmet in front of and behind its gravity axis. <IMAGE>
