The invention relates to a method for printing multi-coloured characters, symbols and graphics, exhibiting a particular picture-element grid, of a displayable text page, the character contents such as shape, colour and size, of which are stored page by page digitally coded in a buffer memory and can be called up character by character, by means of a single-colour printer. Such text information items are provided in accordance with the modern communication systems such as videotex, telephone, teletext and videotext. For processing the characters, the boundary lines of the characters to be represented are determined in accordance with foreground and background colours and stored in a contour memory. Furthermore, the colour differences between adjacent character spaces are determined and the boundary lines are also stored in a colour contour memory. The individual memory information items are read out by a microprocessor-controlled sequence circuit and stored display line by display line in a main memory which is allocated to the printer and read out and printed out by a printer control unit.
