A lance, for injecting pulverulent material and/or blowing gas under the surface of a metal bath, comprises a metallic tube surrounded by a refractory material sheath, the sheath having an increased thickness over at least part of its length. - Pref. the sheath has a zone, of 0.5-2 times the nominal sheath thickness, which extends for a length of 0.2-0.8 times the free length of the sheath and which terminates at a distance of 0.6-1.2 m from the free end of the sheath.
