PURPOSE:To obatin a material for optical transmission undergoing a very slight change in the refractive index due to its heat history and causing only a small optical loss by using a core made of high purity quartz glass and a clad made of quartz glass contg. B and F as dopants obtd. by a specified method. CONSTITUTION:A material for optical transmission is composed essentially of a core made of high purity quartz glass and a clad made of doped quartz glass. At this time, a silica layer doped with B and F is formed by the oxidation of SiCl4 contg. added BF3 by external heating, and the silica layer is used as the clad. A material for optical transmission having stability in heating history and causing only a small optical loss is obtd.
