The apparatus for the mechanical purification of a flow of effluent in an open channel has a screen box, at least one screening surface arranged in the screen box at an angle to the direction of flow of the water, and a cleaning device for the screening surface. In the direction of flow of the water to be treated, the screen box is divided vertically into at least two screen chambers. These are each connected on the inflow side to a discharge line which is provided with a control valve and fitted with a pump. On the inflow side upstream of the screen chambers, there is also a cleaning flap, by means of which the screen chambers can be isolated individually. Cleaning of the screening surfaces of the individual screen chambers is effected by closing the cleaning flap and backwashing by means of the pump.
