The rod comprises a rail with two measuring forks, and a fixed colour marker for marking timber at the time of measurement. The two forks are slidably located on the rail for movement on each side of the rail central point, and are connected to each other by movement transmission components. This means that the movement of the one fork in one of two directions along the rail brings about a corresponding movement of the other fork in the opposite direction. The colour marker is attached to the rail central point, and is therefore at all times centrally between the forks, permitting a tree trunk engaged between the forks to be marked in direction connection with the act of measurement. For movement transmission, a sling in the form of a wire, belt or chain is arranged movably along the rail edge, the forks being attached to the respective long sides of the sling.
