PURPOSE:To provide a paste for fibrous wall materials, which has excellent initial water resistance and rust proofness, consisting of a zirconium salt, a film- forming aid and an emulsion obtd. by polymerizing styrene, a (meth)acrylate ester and an unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a specified emulsifier. CONSTITUTION:A paste consists of a zirconium salt, 4-20pts.wt. film-forming aid and 100pts.wt. copolymer emulsion obtd. by emulsion-polymerizing 40- 69.5wt% styrene and/or methacrylate ester, 30-50wt% acrylate ester and 0.5- 10wt% unsaturated carboxylic acid as structural units in the presence of 2- 5wt% (based on the combined quantity of the monomers) emulsifier composed of a mixture of compds. of formulas I and II (wherein R is an 8-20C alkyl; n is 1-50). In the production of said copolymer emulsion, 2-5wt% nonionic surfactant may be added to the monomer component to an extent within which the rust proofing performance of the emulsifier is not reduced.
