NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl; X is F, Cl or CN). EXAMPLE:Trans-4-(trans-4-Methoxymethylcyclohexyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 3-fluorophenyl ester. USE:A component of liquid crystal composition. It is useful for extending the lower limit of the liquid crystal temperature range. Since the compound has small DELTAepsilon (about 0.2) and a low viscosity (30cp at 20 deg.C), it is effective also to reduce the viscosity of the whole composition. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the trans-4-(trans-alkoxymethylcyclohexyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid of formula IIwith SOCl2, and reacting the resultant acid chloride of formula III with the 3- substituted-phenol of formula IV in pyridine.
