PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in the state of fine and anhydrous particles, by the reaction of NaOH or KOH with phenol in a petroleum hydrocarbon solution, by adding the phenol solution to the system under controlled condition to prevent the agglomeration, under heating and stirring while distilling out water from the system. CONSTITUTION:An essentially anhydrous phenolate is obtained in the state of fine particles, by heating a mixture of a solid or dehydrated NaOH or KOH and a petroleum hydrocarbon (e.g. gas oil, kerosine, etc.) under stirring, if necessary passing N2 gas slowly to the mixture, adding a petroleum hydrocarbon solution of phenol slowly dropwise to the mixture at a rate to prevent the agglomeration of the objective compound caused by the residual water produced by the reaction, and at the same time, distilling out the produced water from the system by azeotropic dehydration. EFFECT:The adhesion and fusion of the phenolate can be prevented. USE:Raw material for the preparation of hydroxybenzoic acid.
