NEW MATERIAL:The derivative of S-(+)-4-(2-methylbutylphenyl)benzoic acid diethylstilbestrol ester of formula I (* is asymmetric carbon atom). USE:A component of liquid crystal composition. It has optical activity and helical molecular structure in the liquid crystal state. Addition of a small amount of the compound to a nematic liquid crystal gives a liquid crystal composition for a cholestericnematic phase transition-type display element or White-Taylor-type display element. When it is added to a nematic liquid crystal composition for a TN-type display element, the stripe pattern (reverse domain) of the display surface is reduced and the quality of the display can be improved. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting S-(+)-4- (2-methylbutyl)benzoic acid chloride of formula II with diethylstilbestrol of formula III in pyridine.
