PURPOSE:To provide a water-based enteric coating agent having high handleability, dispersibility, film-forming property, safety, etc., by dispersing a specific amount of a carboxyl-containing cellulose derivative in a mixture of a lower alcohol, water and ammonia. CONSTITUTION:A mixed solvent composed of a 1-3C lower alcohol, water and ammonia is mixed with 2-20wt% of a carboxyl-containing cellulose derivative (e.g. cellulose acetate phthalate, carboxymethyl ethylcellulose, etc.) to obtain the objective water-based enteric coating agent. The ratio of ammonia in the whole solvent is 0.01-1wt%, preferably 0.03-0.3wt%. The lower alcohol is principally ethyl alcohol from the view-point of safety. It has excellent dispersibility, film- forming property, yield, and safety compared with conventional water-based enteric coating agents.
