PURPOSE:To cope flexibly with complicated correcting processing by storing a data after correction to an ROM. CONSTITUTION:An original placed on an original placing plate 9 where the reading plane is placed downward is lighted by a fluorescent lamp 2 and the image of the original is formed on a CCD 7 via reflecting mirrors 3, 5 and a lens 6. The fluorescent lamp 2 and the mirrors 3, 5 are moved along a guide rail 8 by an optical system motor so as to scan the original on the original placing plate 9. A shading SHD correcting plate 1 having a reference density provided at the outside of the original placing region is read ahead the scanning of the original. The read signal is converted into an electric signal by the CCD 7 and amplified 10, A/D-converted 11 and inputted to an SHD correcting circuit 12. The circuit 12 stores the correcting signal read by the correcting plate 1 in an RAM, reads an SHD corrected data stored in the ROM by taking an image signal read from the original and a correcting signal from the RAM as addresses to eliminate the SHD caused by uneven light irradiation of the fluorescent lamp 2 or the like.
