PURPOSE:To convert an inputted phonetic character string into a ''katakana'' (square form of Japanese syllabary)/''kanji'' (Chinese character) mixed sentence and ''romaji'' (the Roman letters)/''kanji'' mixed sentence easily by outputting phonetic characters which can not be converted into ''kanji'' as the inputted kind of characters out of an inputted phonetic character string. CONSTITUTION:When ''romaji'' (NAGAREZUHA) is keyed from a keyboard 1, the ''romaji'' codes are stored in a buffer memory 2 as shown in the figure (a) and (NAGAREZUHA) is displayed on a CRT15. When a ''kanji'' conversion key is depressed, the 1st conversion part 8 converts all the ''romaji'' codes into corresponding reference codes as shown in the figure (b) while referring a conversion table memory 9. The 2nd conversion part 10 matches the reference codes with the contents of a word dictionary memory 11, converts the reference codes into a ''kana'' (Japanese syllabary)/''kanji'' mixed sentence, which is stored in a buffer memory 4 as shown in the figure (c). In addition, the character codes are displayed as shown in the figure (d) e.g. in accordance with the contents of a character kind register 7.
