A survival still which produces fresh water from sea-water comprises a relatively thick microporous membrane 7 which is overlaid by a sea-water absorbing wicking material 4 which is attached to the membrane 7 at its periphery. The material 4 is heated by solar radiation and vapour from the absorbed water passes downward through the membrane into a condenser formed by a liquid and vapour impermeable sheet 9 bonded to the membrane 7, this defines a distillate chamber 8 within which the vapour is condensed and collected. The wicking material is covered by and bonded to a liquid and vapour impermeable sheet exposed to solar radiation. |
