The rotating compensator of the invention includes a conventionally designed stator, with polyphase windings, and a laminated sheet metal rotor of very high radial permeability. The rotor consists of sheet metal segments overlapping from one layer to the next, the segments constituting the felly and the poles P. The rotor is of the type with salient poles saturated in favoured regions of the pole bodies by the magnetic field of the stator, thus imposing a small air gap. The compensator operates in the saturated region of its current-voltage characteristic. Cutouts 3 enable the magnetic field to be confined within these favoured regions so as to saturate the sheet metal. <IMAGE>
