The invention comprises a process and an appliance for producing hydrogen from water by means of heat or solar energy. In order to produce hydrogen, water is heated in a pressure vessel. The walls of said pressure vessel in part consist of a hydrogen-permeable material. The more strongly the water is heated, the more hydrogen atoms are dissociated from the water molecules and penetrate the hydrogen-permeable walls. These walls are arranged in such a way that the hydrogen passing through the walls is separated from the water and can be collected.
