In a metal casting operation in which molten metal is poured from a first vessel, in which it is covered with a slag layer, into a second vessel, at least one characteristic of the sound emitted during pouring is measured, pref. continuously, and the instant that the characteristic changes substantially, e.g. varies by more than a predetermined amt. w.r.t. the value of the characteristic corresponding to the flow of metal alone, is detected. - The process is esp. useful in the continuous casting of steel to prevent slag transfer from a ladle to a tundish. The process allows detection of the instant that the melt flow is subjected to a disturbance, e.g. by slag entrainment, by a (partial) obstruction of the ladle taphole or by the melt becoming pasty due to local cooling.(0/0)
