Safety device for rope descender/blocker, of the type making it possible to progress along a fixed rope and to change very rapidly from the ascending position to the descending position, or vice versa, by manual action and without removing the rope from the descender/blocker which comprises two stationary friction pieces, one for ascending and descending, the other for descending, and a jaw for blocking the rope. According to the invention, a retractable means at least partially closes off the passage of the rope over the descending friction piece 3, the said closing-off means being integral with a lever 10 blocking the control handle of the descender/blocker, the release performed manually by the user of the said removable means to permit the positioning of the rope in the descending position giving rise to unblocking of the handle. <IMAGE>
