PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound, easily, in high yield and purity, by using an optical resolving agent comprising an optically active 1-(p-tolyl)ethylamine which is chemically stable and is available industrially at a low cost. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula such as the (+)-isomer thereof having anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities, etc. is prepared by (1) mixing (+ or -)-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid with equimolar amount of optically active 1-(p-tolyl)ethylamine as an optical resolving agent and a solvent, preferably 95% ethanol or methanol, (2) heating the mixture to obtain a supersaturated solution, (3) if necessary, inoculating a small amount of a diastereomer salt of 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-propionic acid.1-(p-tolyl)ethylamine salt having lower solubility in said solvent among two diastereomer salts of the compound, (4) cooling the supersaturated solution, and (5) separating the precipitated hardly soluble salt from the solution.
