In the case of relatively long fastening means it is often difficult to apply sufficient force to shear off a fastening means, for example a nail, with an electrically operated unit using the pinion-type cutter. As the pinion-type cutter rests directly on the front attachment means which projects into the ejection channel before the start of a drive-in stroke, the armature does not have sufficient force when an electrical magnetising pulse is emitted to sever the attachment means. The present design circumvents this disadvantage in that the pinion-type cutter is connected to the armature so as to be movable in the direction of movement. As a result of this, sufficient kinetic energy is available to the pinon-type cutter for severing relatively large attachment means, especially nails of the longer sort.
