In the said valve timing system, two cams (N1 and N2) with different valve timings for one valve or valve pair are brought into operation in stages by way of a hydraulic valve tappet, the special feature of which consists in the fact that the tappet housing (1) and the tappet cylinder (2) are formed as independent tappets by integrally formed cam bearing surfaces (8 and 9), and the pressure build-up in the pressure chamber (6) can be varied by controlling the non-return valve (5) by means of the piston (3) under the influence of the control of the oil supply to the hydraulic valve tappet by the control piston (21) and, in this way, a valve or valve pair is actuated by one or other of the cams, this having the effect that two torque peaks are obtained over the entire speed range of the engine, thus improving the power range of internal combustion engines. <IMAGE>
