PURPOSE:To prepare an optical fiber having improved transmission characteristics and mechanical characteristics inexpensively, by putting a core part obtained by flame decomposition process in a glass tube formed by sol-gel process, integrated them under heating, followed by drawing. CONSTITUTION:The raw material solution consisting of a silicon alkoxide, water and a diluted solution is put in a given container, ultrasonic wave vibration is impressed on it, bubbles in the solution are removed, and the solution is allowed to stand to give a hollow cylindrical gel. The gel 6 is then gradually dried to give dried gel, which is sintered by the heater 7 under heating to form the silica glass tube 12. While, a raw material gas containing silicon tetrachloride as a main component and germanium tetrachloride is subjected to flame hydrolysis to give soot, which is piled, sintered and made transparent to give the glass rod 11. The glass rod 11 is inserted into the glass tube 12, they are heated at about 1,800-1,900 deg.C by the heater 13 and integrated, and drawn to give the optical fiber 14. |
