This control device for machine tools serves to position a working spindle (1) at a specific angular position and to transport a tool carriage, which is driven via a threaded spindle (1), into a predeterminable target position by means of an angular position controller or a location controller. The spindle (1) is driven by a motor (3) via a gearbox (2). In order to allow for the mass inertia moments of the rotating parts during control optimisation, the gear transmission ratio (n/f) is formed, its root is extracted via a square-root law transfer element (11) and fed to a multiplier (12) serving as angular controller or location controller. The motor speed actual value (nact) and the spindle speed (f) are used to form the gear transmission ratio (n/f). The spindle speed is acquired from the signal transmitter pulses (P) of a pulse generator (5), on the spindle axis, which serves as an incremental position detection device for the angular position or the carriage position. <IMAGE>
