In order to endow a preliminary screen with a high fault-free performance, said preliminary screen being connected in front of a separating station for sorting mixed waste, in particular in the agricultural field, the preliminary screen is constructed as an upwardly open worm wheel which rotates about a horizontal axis and has vane faces which are perforated in a screen-like manner and a collecting element on the underside. During operation, the mixed waste is tipped over from above into a screening compartment of the worm wheel and is then separated by continued swivelling of the worm wheel.
