A transmission is provided with a cooling device for cooling a lubricating oil of the transmission and with a heating device for heating the lubricating oil. The transmission housing holding the lubricating oil is connected to the cooling device and to the heating device via a line arrangement which is capable of allowing the lubricating oil to circulate between the housing and the cooling device or between the housing and the heating device. A switching valve is arranged in the line arrangement. The switching valve can prevent the fluid flowing either to the cooling device or to the heating device. A sensor is arranged in the transmission housing in order to determine the temperature of the lubricating oil located in the housing. An operating device is connected to the sensor in order to control the switching valve as a function of the oil temperature determined. By controlling the switching valve, the operating device enables the lubricating oil to flow through the heating device when the oil temperature determined is less than a predetermined temperature value, and it enables the lubricating oil to flow through the cooling device when the oil temperature determined is greater than the predetermined temperature value.
